Botox cosmetic (Allergan) blocks nerve impulses to the injected muscle, thus reducing the muscular contraction that causes lines to form between the brows, forehead, or crow’s feet.
The most common side effects include injection site pain, bruising, headache, brow asymmetry or drooping. Botox cosmetic has never caused respiratory depression or death when used at recommended doses to treat facial wrinkles. It varies from person to person, but within 2-4 days the effects will become apparent and will continue to improve for up to 30 days. The treatment lasts for up to 4 months.
Contraindications to Botox cosmetic include: pregnancy, lactation, neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, ALS, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, infection at site of injection, known allergy to Botox or Dysport.
